Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
