As bewildering as it is to observe the leader try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense of him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.
It is emphatically not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for others, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy states that when someone steals your coat you should give him your sweater also.
The obvious and clear truth that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
Hence I have become inspired to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it unique and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest feigning the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both modesty and faith, a mixture that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
