Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.
